It was just a couple days ago that I was passing along word of Becky Lynch talking about top WWE stars aging out. The end is closer than the beginning, and it’s time to prepare for the future and all that. She’s not wrong, necessarily.
Current WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, himself 40-years-old, was asked about the main event scene getting old and had a pretty damn good response for it on The Breakfast Club:
“In the golden ’80s, we used to joke that a wrestler’s prime was 35 to 42. That’s because they needed
all that experience psychologically. They worked town to town, live crowds were everything. How do you work with a live crowd? How do you involve them? We’re not doing this just for each other or just for the camera. How are they involved? That has cycled back now. A few years ago, they brought in what I’d say are all freshmen on a varsity team. There’s this famous picture of me and CM Punk and Matt Cardona and we’re all babies and had won the big titles, but we didn’t really have a clue at that point. We didn’t have that experience. So now I think you’re getting back to where you’ve got guys like Roman, me, Punk, Randy, the main events of WrestleMania. I’d just like to say it’s a very experienced crew.”
He’s not wrong, necessarily, either. It’s rare that the big stars are big stars right away and looking back, the biggest stars of all time typically did their best work later into their careers.
It’s just the business, baby.
Or do you disagree with your QB1?
