As the Commanders search for the right roster pieces in the final stretch of games, the defensive snap count data against the Miami Dolphins told a story out of the ordinary for this season. Quan Martin played a season low 38 snaps against the Dolphins Sunday, as Head Coach Dan Quinn would initially describe as “just a change in personnel.” From a percentage standpoint, Quan played 66 percent of snaps, but Quinn went slightly further in depth, saying that there were “some corrections that had to be made,”
and while he didn’t go into specifics with the corrections with Martin, the comments that he did give were loud enough.
Martin, a player who was once highly regarded by coaches, media, and (most) fans, seems to be facing a different reality this season. His performance, which was once a constant on the field, has seen a significant shift. The Dolphins game marked the third time this season he played fewer than 76 percent of the snaps, and it was the second-lowest of the season. This week, it’s clear that Quan’s struggles are catching up to him, particularly from a reliability standpoint.
On the latest Trap or Dive Podcast, Dre and I dive into the bye week chronicles, which includes dissecting why Quinn chose to share just enough insight on Martin’s situation, where we can read between the lines. For all of the love Martin received in the off-season, Quinn’s bluntness on why his snaps decreased this week is the real callout on Martin. I firmly believe the coaching staff has not given up on Martin, he’ll continue receiving majority of the snaps at safety. However, I am also confident that these last six games will help Washington determine his standing as their starting safety beyond this season.
