There may be very little left to play for in the Bundesliga, but the Premier League still has a few twists and turns left to keep things interesting. Over the weekend, Spurs managed to climb out of the relegation zone after a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, while last night Man City gave Arsenal the upper-hand in the title race thanks to a 3-3 draw with Everton. Spurs are just one point ahead of West Ham, so they are very far from safe, but you have to think they are the favourites to avoid the drop
now. At the other end of the table, Monday evening’s upset now leaves City trailing Arsenal by five points, and they have just four games left to try to catch them. Things are looking good in North London!
Arsenal are preoccupied with the Champions League tonight, though, as they look to reach the final for just the second time in their history. They host Atletico Madrid for the second leg of their semi-final, with the scores level at 1-1. It’ll be a tense game, but we probably shouldn’t expect the kind of fireworks we’ve seen in the other semi-final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
BVB News
- Borussia Dortmund are close to finalising a deal worth ~€25m for RB Salzburg center-back Joane Gadou.
- BVB are planning to offer Niko Kovač a contract extension this summer, keeping the Croatian manager at the club beyond 2027. Negotiations are expected to begin at the end of the season.
- Kovač has defended his team’s performance this season, arguing they have, for the most part, met expectations. I think he is correct. The club needs to give Kovač a stronger squad if they want to see better results.
- Edin Terzić has been confirmed as Athletic Bilbao’s new head coach. He will replace Ernesto Valverde this summer.
Bundesliga News
- Bayern Munich are in negotiations with Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, though Newcastle’s €90m asking price remains an obstacle. Meanwhile, Barcelona are apparently joining the race for Gordon. I must admit, as good as he is, I’m a little surprised that we could see a bidding war between Bayern Munich and Barcelona…
- Time could be up for Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Albert Riera, with just one win in the last six games. If he doesn’t get a result against BVB on Friday night, Riera may not see out the rest of the season.
- Hoffenheim’s Bazoumana Touré is attracting plenty of interest from the Premier League, but the Sinsheim club will demand a fee in excess of €40m for the 20-year-old forward.
