According to a report from Abendzeitung journalist Patrick Strasser, Serge Gnabry is “on the verge” of inking a new deal with the club that will represent an €8 million pay cut from his current total package (salary + bonus) of €23 million.
The move is strategic for Gnabry, though, as laid out by Strasser (via @iMiaSanMia):
Serge Gnabry is on the verge of extending his contract at FC Bayern. The new deal will be performance based, with a salary that could go up to around €15m gross per year including
all possible bonuses. Gnabry has accepted to take a pay cut for two reasons: firstly, he wants to focus on the second half of the season with Bayern and secure his World Cup spot without speculation and rumours around his future. Secondly, Gnabry appreciates Vincent Kompany and his football philosophy a lot – and wants to continue to play under him.
In addition to Strasser, Fabrizio Romano (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) is reporting that deal is “close”:
The agreement between Bayern and Serge Gnabry over a new contract is considered close. There are still some details to be clarified, but Gnabry is expected to sign a new deal and stay at the club.
Gnabry has been rumored to want to stay in Bavaria, but even last year it was thought that he had no future with the club past his current deal. Now, though, a strong first half, some key versatility, and a willingness to take a pay reduction has him in a good position to stay for at least another two to three years at a very good pay rate.
Not a bad gig if you can get it, eh?
