The Colorado Rockies are expected to announce the hire of Tommy Tanous on Wednesday afternoon to serve as an assistant general manager under president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes.
The hire was first rumored by league sources on Tuesday evening and confirmed by Rockies beat reporter Thomas Harding on Wednesday morning.
Tanous is a long-time executive for the New York Mets organization, first joining them 2011. He most recently served as their vice president
and special advisor to president of baseball operations David Stearns. He also has an extensive background in both professional and amateur scouting, serving as the Mets’ scouting director from 2012-2016. He also worked extensively with Paul DePodesta during the latter’s time with the Mets under then-general manager Sandy Alderson, where they worked together in coordinating the Mets’ draft.
Prior to his time with the Mets, Tanous worked in the scouting departments for the Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, and Milwaukee Brewers.
The hire of Tanous follows a complete revamp of the Rockies’ organizational and major league pitching staff on Tuesday night in addition to the seismic reshaping of the Rockies’ front office.
Per Thomas Harding, assistant general manager of scouting Marc Gustafson and director of player development Chris Forbes are expected to remain in their current roles.
This is a developing story and Purple Row will provide updates as they become available.
