On Wednesday, President of Baseball Operations Andrew Freidman that surgery “is not on the table’ for Shohei Ohtani. Eric Stephen covers that development here.
Bill Plaschke of the L.A. Times in his opinion piece thinks that the Dodgers should stop letting Ohtani pitch. He even floats the idea that if Ohtani continues to insist on pitching, the Dodgers should consider trading the modern Babe Ruth.
His piece includes this quote from Ohtani –
“Not quite satisfied with how things shaped up on the pitching
side at the end of the year,” he said. “This year, I haven’t pitched and I haven’t pitched in the postseason. You know, I haven’t been able to really come to grips in terms of what I’ve learned overall this season. It’s something that I’m going to kind of go back to the drawing board in terms of treatment, training program. and see what I can come up with for next season.”
While trading the two-way player would be a nuclear option, it’s clear the team and Ohtani need to come to a better understanding about what best for the team.
A team that also needs to face the fact their team is aging, writes Maddie Lee of the L.A. Times. Freidman with his usual deprecating manner, commented on that and other issues, such as owner Mark Walter’s financial troubles and how he feels about the Dodgers being at the possible end of their dynasty. As usual, Freidman isn’t worried about any of it.
Bill Plunkett of the OC Register also has comments from Freidman in his end-of-season press conference, including why they’re excited that Ohtani will be returning to the mound in 2027.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has an opinion piece saying that the small market teams are officially out of excuses is saying only big spenders make the postseason and the World Series. Good news for Dodger fans who have been blamed endlessly for the state of baseball today (she said tongue in cheek).
