The Packers’ defense showed itself to be a bit better than just a unit that beats up on bad quarterbacks on Sunday.
What, exactly, Dak Prescott is as a player at this point is open to debate and discussion, but I think most people would agree he’s still a pretty good player — better than Geno Smith and Jalon Daniels and the Tyson Bagent/Case Keenum combo platter, at least. And with weapons like CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, there was plenty of reason to be wary of the Cowboys’ offense.
And the Packers
shut it down, despite their ever-growing list of injuries. How? In part because of contributions from a strong rookie class.
Brandon Cisse played his best game as a pro against the Cowboys’ terrific receiving duo, earning his first career interception in the process (admittedly a bit of a cheapie, but you take what you can get). Dani-Dennis Sutton, meanwhile, continued to provide regular pressure, shoring up an edge rusher room widely condemned in the national press as being bereft of talent without Micah Parsons. Chris McClellan has continued to provide valuable, if unspectacular, reps on the defensive line, and Trey Smack was perfect kicking field goals and PATs.
That’s a pretty good night from a rookie class that’s looking pretty darn good, even without a first round pick in the mix. And to loosely quote Al McGuire, the best thing about rookies is they’ll eventually not be rookies, pointing to good things ahead from this group of players.
It’s still a mystery how far the Packers can go this year, but their promising rookies will help them along the way to wherever they end up and beyond, continuing to grow as they figure out what it means to be an NFL player.
