San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked if the team would have kicker tryouts after Eddy Pineiro missed another extra point on Sunday. Shanahan said, “I haven’t discussed it with guys. I haven’t been told that we are. I actually just finished with the team and just finished with the quarterbacks and came in here. As far as I’ve heard, we don’t have any plans on that right now.”
On KNBR Tuesday morning, John Lynch said, “We don’t have a kicker tryout,” echoing Shanahan. Lynch continued:
“We have a lot of belief in Eddy. He has had a tough run early this year, but we extended Eddy for his body of work with us but then throughout the history of his career. He’s going through a rough patch right now. We have belief in Eddy, and we’re going to ride with him.”
A financial factor is part of the decision to keep Pineiro. The 49ers owe him $4 million in guaranteed salary in 2027. That’s the final year of guaranteed money in Pineiro’s contract. So, unless he leaves them with no choice, Pineiro will be the 49ers’ kicker through 2027.
Pineiro built equity after a near-perfect 2025 season. He still has a little grace to give, but he’s running out of rope, and the tone could change if he misses a game-deciding kick.
