LSU’s season has been far from perfect, but writing off the Tigers now might be a mistake.
Coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Kentucky, LSU needed a response. The Tigers delivered in emphatic fashion, shutting out No. 16 Mississippi State, 31-0, and reminding the SEC that this team still has plenty of fight left.
The biggest takeaway wasn’t just the final score. It was how LSU responded after a loss that could have easily sent their season spiraling in the wrong direction.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt
threw four touchdown passes without an interception, while the defense completely shut down a ranked opponent. After the inconsistencies that have plagued LSU this season, Saturday’s performance was the kind of response the Tigers desperately needed.
And yet, questions remain.
At 5-2, LSU doesn’t have much room for error. The Tigers have already suffered two losses, and one impressive performance doesn’t erase the problems that contributed to them. Consistency remains the biggest hurdle between LSU and legitimate SEC contention.
But people might be giving up on this team too soon.
LSU has the talent to compete with some of the best teams in the country. When the offense is clicking and the defense plays with the intensity it showed against Mississippi State, the Tigers look capable of making noise beyond the regular season.
The challenge now is sustaining that level of play. One shutout doesn’t make a turnaround, but it can be the starting point for one.
LSU has put themselves in a difficult position, but their season isn’t over. If the Tigers can build on this performance, clean up their mistakes and string together wins, the conversation surrounding this team could look very different in a few weeks.
For now, don’t count LSU out just yet.
