It’s the one match of any World Cup that no one wants to play in, but today two powerhouse teams will be in it. This afternoon, France will face England in the 2026 World Cup 3rd place match down in Miami.
France had seen the final in the past two World Cups, and they had every intention of making it back to the final this time around. However, they ran into Spain and lost 2-0. It was a devastating loss for Les Bleus, who have to pull it together to try and leave the World Cup with a win.
England’s
loss was heartbreaking to its players and fans. With 6 minutes left before stoppage time, England had the lead and one foot in the final. Then, Argentina rattled off 2 goals in 6 minutes to flip the game on its head, and instead England has to settle for the 3rd place match.
One thing to watch is the Golden Boot race. Both Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane have a chance in this match to get a couple of goals and get past Lionel Messi, who’s playing in the final. Mbappé is tied with Messi with 8 goals, though Messi has more assists now and is in the Golden Boot lead. Kane has 6 goals, so he has some work to do. It will be interesting to see if both teams go for it and give their stars a chance to shoot their way to the Golden Boot in this match.
