Welcome to Tuesday, Bulldog fans! Twenty-five percent of the Bulldog scheduled games are complete, Week 3 is in the books, and with a resurgent Alabama offense coming to Athens, you could probably use an off week. That is exactly what we have, and none too soon if you’re a Georgia offensive lineman or the coaches responsible for their conditioning and execution. Even though it’s an off week, that doesn’t mean you can’t get your “rocks off”. Ladies & Gentlemen… The Rolling Stones!
Now onto news and
notes of the Georgia Bulldog variety:
There is no pre-game press conference for Kirby Smart this week, so you’ll have to wait a few days before hearing what he has to say about the visiting Crimson Tide. Macondawg does have you covered with Coach Smart’s post-game comments in the bowels of Neyland.
Did I just read that UGA’s record was an embarassing 3-11 when ESPN’s College GameDay was on site for their games? At least that improved to 4-11 after Saturday. Hhhmmmm, I wonder when that GameDay bus will roll into Athens? The way Arch Manning is playing, I would bet sooner rather than later.
It might have taken 3 games, but we finally have some conference-level recognition for the Bulldogs. Gunner Stockton was honored with being the SEC Offensive Player of the Week. Quite the turnaround for someone who couldn’t throw down the field just 7 days prior, eh? Though the stats aren’t as gaudy as some, no turnovers and clutch plays including the 4th and 6 touchdown pass to Humphreys probably pushed him into the top slot.
Placekicker Peyton Woodring also took home SEC Special Teams Player of the Week. He did hit a 48 yard FG, plus 2 other chip shots and 3 extra points. He might have won for not gaacking on a 43 yarder. I don’t know, seems subjective.
Before we leave Kirby Smart’s newest vacation getaway on the banks of the Tennessee River, we turn to the intrepid reporters of the Red & Black for their weekly Bulldog position grades. In case there is too much, I will sum up: offense pretty good, defense not so good. This was not inconceivable.
The off week/bye week comes at a pretty good time. The football staff can concentrate on watching Alabama film and trying to stop Ty Simpson’s attacks on completion percentage records; they can utilize the training facilities and staff to heal up the umpteen offensive linemen who are injured such as Juan Gaston and Earnest Greene; or they can reach out through “channels” to see which UCLA and VaTech players are exploring greener pastures.
Don’t look now, but Carson Beck is doing well in south Florida, after beating South Florida, at least until he leaves south Florida.
It will probably be a slow news day and week, while the nation’s eyes turn to teams playing football this weekend. Honestly, with our history, that won’t be a bad thing. Enjoy the day, and as always…
GO ‘DAWGS!!!
