Martin Emerson Jr. made his presence felt in the New Orleans Saints’ 34-27 victory over the New York Giants, putting together one of the defense’s most impressive individual performances of the season.
Emerson finished with seven combined tackles, two interceptions, four passes defensed, one pressure and one tackle. His performance earned him an 88.4 overall defensive grade and a 90.2 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus, highlighting just how effective he was against the Giants.
His two interceptions
were the biggest difference-makers. Emerson picked off both Jameis Winston and J.J. McCarthy, and was inches away from a third interception late in the fourth quarter.
For a Saints defense that’s been lacking consistent playmakers in the secondary, Emerson’s performance was exactly the type of showing that can change the conversation surrounding a unit.
The Saints escaped with a seven-point victory after allowing the Giants to erase much of their early deficit. That late-game collapse overshadowed what was otherwise a productive afternoon for several New Orleans players, but Emerson’s performance deserves recognition.
If he can build on this performance, Emerson could become an increasingly important piece of the Saints’ secondary moving forward.
