Penn State’s defense battled valiantly for most of Saturday night’s double overtime loss to No. 6 Oregon at Beaver Stadium.
Transfer linebacker Amare Campbell was one of the leaders for that group.
For his
team-high 15 tackle performance, Campbell is this week’s BSD MVP.
The highlight play of the night for Campbell came early as he broke through and stopped a fourth-and-short play for the Ducks in the first quarter. The play ignited the second-largest crowd in stadium history and gave the offense great field position, which they squandered.
Campbell’s one big mistake came on a third down play where he was assigned to spy Oregon quarterback Dante Moore. On that third quarter play, Moore was able to slip a Campbell tackle attempt and put the Ducks in position to go for it on fourth down and go ahead 17-3.
Campbell also had a tackle reviewed in overtime for targeting, but replay determined that he did not use the crown of his helmet on a stop near the goal line.
Others Considered
Zakee Wheatley, Safety: The senior had 10 tackles, second most behind Campbell. He also had what looked like a game-changing fumble recovery and return to midfield that was overturned by replay.
Devonte Ross, Receiver: The transfer had four catches for 48 yards and both Penn State touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Lions rallied to tie the game.
