Avery Styles is ready to fly. TNA is giving AJ’s son the slow treatment since signing him. Avery has taken a backseat under mentor Frankie Kazarian. His first match in TNA will be the Call Your Shot Gauntlet at Bound For Glory on Sunday, October 11. Avery hadn’t gotten physical on screen, until now. The Phenomenal Son landed one of his father’s signature moves on Impact (Oct. 8, 2026).
TNA laid down foreshadowing. As Kazarian head to the ring, he told Avery not to let anyone push him around. Lo and
behold, former NWA world junior heavyweight champion Joe Alonzo pushed Avery with a shove to the face.
As the 8-man tag team action brawled on the floor, Kaz called in Avery to take his revenge on Alonzo. Styles leaped for the Spiral Tap and landed on the mark.
Here is a compilation video to compare father to son on the Spiral Tap.
AJ Styles created the Spiral Tap as an answer to Billy Kidman not wanting him to do the shooting star press. Styles explained to Chris Van Vliet (transcription via Cultaholic):
“So in WCW, I was doing the Shooting Star to the floor. Billy Kidman hated me. Hated. He would call me, ‘AJ Steals.’ I wanted to hurt him so bad, legit, but he was Kidman at that time in WCW. He can’t be touched at all, right? So they asked me if I wanted to do the Shooting Star. I was like, ‘No, no, I won’t do it because it’s Kidman’s move. I’ll just do something that he can’t.’ That’s how I came with the Spiral Tap. So yeah, all because Kidman hated me doing the Shooting Star Press, but at the time he wasn’t doing it, so… He did come back and started doing it. So kudos to him.”
Styles also mentioned to Van Vliet that he can’t do the Spiral Tap anymore. He lost that athleticism over time in his career. That last time Styles did a Spiral Tap was over a decade ago.
