The Cleveland Browns are looking to replicate whatever it takes to get to the Super Bowl. Whether that is through the NFL draft and finding a veteran quarterback to help them win quickly or hitting on
a top-level young quarterback while building around that player, the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots have shown the way.
Both teams replaced their head coaches recently, something the Browns have also done.
Cleveland GM Andrew Berry has his work cut out for him with the Browns roster on offense. Despite QB Shedeur Sanders making the Pro Bowl, many believe that the quarterback position is still uncertain for the Browns future.
On Super Bowl Sunday, all of a sudden, a new name became an option: retired New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr:
A few months ago, when asked about coming out of retirement, Derek Carr said he would “never say never. Because I’ve learned that when I say never, it usually happens.”
It just might happen.
That work continues, and an offseason of quarterback uncertainty — with limited options in free agency, trades and the draft — makes Carr a possible solution in the right situation.
As noted in the article, the Saints still own Carr’s rights, but the reporting notes that, with Tyler Shough in place, New Orleans would be unlikely to demand high trade compensation for Carr.
Carr is a four-time Pro Bowler, including most recently in 2022. In his 11-year career, Carr completed 65% of his passes with 257 touchdowns and 112 interceptions. When he retired last offseason, due to a lingering shoulder issue, Carr had two years left on a four-year contract.
Prior to his retirement, the Saints restructured his deal, pushing cap space into future seasons, which means an acquiring team is likely to redo his deal if he returns. Carr is not certain to return, with The NFL Network noting that the quarterback is enjoying time with family and with projects.
Similar to Sam Darnold with the Seahawks, Carr could help a team move forward on offense. Whether Browns HC Todd Monken is interested in Carr and whether Cleveland would have enough to lure Carr out of retirement would quickly decide whether the two could come together this offseason.
What do you think about Derek Carr filling the Browns short-term quarterback need this offseason? What do you think a trade should be and a fair contract for Carr in Cleveland?
