Not all draws are created equally, and the last two results for Liverpool Women have highlighted that perfectly. Last week, a 1-1 with Brighton provided both a celebratory first point to of the season
for a struggling side—but mostly a feeling of disappointment at letting three points slip away.
This week, a 1-1 draw against Chelsea feels like a victory. Last week, Liverpool had the lead late against mid-table Brighton. But against title contenders Chelsea, trailing before Beata Olsson struck in the 33rd minute to draw the Reds level and grafting the rest of the way to hang on, the mood is far more positive.
“I think we work hard together and everything that we do sets us up for these moments,” said the goal scorer following Sunday’s well-earned point against the Super League’s current number two side. “I’m really happy to have scored the goals but I’m just in a position to get served really well.”
Unfortunately for the Reds, though, while they were working hard to steal a point from one of the league’s top sides, West Ham were sweeping aside Everton 3-1 for their first victory of the season—meaning the Hammers have now leapt past Liverpool in the table and the Reds are in last place.
That leaves them in last place having played eight of this season’s 22 league fixtures. If they can play at the level they did on Sunday moving forward, though, the points will start to come and with them hopes of survival in the top flight. With Arsenal up next on the 6th, though, it won’t get any easier.
