Former John Wall, who helped start the John Calipari era with a trip to the Elite Eight in the 2009–10 season, shared his thoughts this week on the current state of the Kentucky basketball program and second-year head coach Mark Pope during an appearance on Yahoo Sports Daily.
Kentucky enters the final stretch of the regular season at 19-10 overall and 10-6 in SEC play, battling through a year defined by injuries. Junior guard Jaland Lowe and sophomore forward Jayden Quaintance have missed most of the season,
while Kam Williams went down with a foot fracture during conference play. Despite the adversity, the Wildcats remain positioned to make noise in March.
Wall spoke openly about how the program can find stability and return to championship form.
“I think yeah, you can have a GM, but at the same time, it’s all about the fit,” Wall says on Yahoo Sports Daily. “What style are you running? Like, does this style fit my style of play, and I think you know, Kentucky, like they said they got rid of Coach Cal (because they wanted to win. They want guys that is going to be there more than one year. They want guys to come in and compete at a high level and try to win championships. They want to hang banners.
“They don’t care about just making the NCAA Tournament or SEC Tournament. So I think that’s the key for them is just trying to get the right fit.”
Wall also shared his belief that Pope can win a national title at Kentucky, but only if the program finds its identity.
“I think you can. I mean, you look at UConn, they went and got guys, and some of their guys are not 5-star guys, but the most important thing with all of this is just building team chemistry. You’ve got to find what your team is about and build that identity. That’s the hard part about Kentucky because they line up changes so much they don’t really know what their identity is.”
