Liga MX Femenil matchdays 4 and 5 were part of one packed doubleheader.
How is the tournament shaping up so far? Who are the leaders and the players to watch?
Charlyn Corral’s is heating up
Despite the fact that Tuzas’ striker Charlyn Corral went scoreless in two out of five games played so far this season, she’s at the top of the goalscorer’s table once again.
Two hat-tricks tallied against Necaxa and Puebla and a lone goal in week 2 against Gallos de Querétaro have put her at the top with seven goals. Corral is followed closely by French international Eugénie Le Sommer, who has scored six goals for Toluca.
Pumas’ Angelina Hix is third with five goals, as well as Pachuca’s Nina Nicosia and Tigres’ Diana Ordóñez. Nonetheless, and leaving this season’s goals aside, Corral is on the verge of breaking yet another record because she’s only 10 goals shy of Chivas’ Alicia “Licha” Cervantes goal record of 177 tallies in 17 seasons played.
Will Corral reap yet another Golden Boot award this season and break another record in the meantime?
Tigres’ last-minute win in week 4
Week 4 brought one of the biggest games of the season with the reigning champions, Tigres, facing Toluca, the club that has been rising nonstop since Patrice Lair took over.
Tigres took the lead thanks to Jheniffer Cordinali who scored in the 36th minute, but then coach Lair subbed in Le Sommer, who started on the bench. And you guessed it, she found the equalizer. However, a corner for Tigres in stoppage time gave Aaliyah Farmer the chance to find the winning goal, and she made no mistake with the finish.
It’s important to add that Toluca played with one player down after Amandine Henry received a second yellow card.
If we talk about Farmer, that might have been the last goal she scored for Tigres, since there are strong rumors about her going back to the United States to play for the NWSL.
Club América’s steady pace
The Club América Eagles are once again starting strong this season. Leaving aside the draw they received against Tijuana, they have been getting dominant, tallying 12 goals in three matches.
These results are not new for the club. They added and renewed key players in January, with the most recent one being Brazilian international striker Geyse Ferreira.
Coach Ángel Villacampa surely thinks the former Barcelona, Manchester United, and Gotham player can help the team to another title.
Pachuca’s goalfest
Club América has scored 14 goals in 5 games. However, Tuzas has said answered the bell and put six more in the back of the net. The latest result was an impressive 6-0 victory over Necaxa, where Corral scored a hat-trick, Abril Fragoso registered a brace, and Chinwendu Ihezuo also added one.
Mazatlán’s best start ever
Mazatlán’s Cañoneras are having the best start to a season in their club’s history at 2-2-1, respectively. As a result, they’re now No. 11 in the table with seven points as the league enters its sixth week.
After having to play against an elite club in week 5, they will have an “easier” match in week 6 when they face the bottom team in the table, Necaxa.
Mazatlán’s players are playing for more than results as next year the club will cease to exist as such. The reason is that club Atlante bought the franchise and they’ll move the teams — women’s and men’s — to Mexico City. This leaves many futures uncertain.
