When Josep Guardiola (yes, that is his real name) first arrived at Bayern in 2013, he immediately razed through the Bundesliga. Not only did he win the league title with 90 points and lose just two games
all season, but he sealed the title in March. Only two teams in the history of the Bundesliga would have pipped Guardiola’s team to the title in his debut campaign, with Bayern managing to rack up 45 points in the first 17 games in the Bundesliga under the Catalan coach’s watch. The team then went on to get 46 in the first of half of the 2014/15 season/ Truly remarkable stuff.
But Bayern could surpass that total under current head coach Vincent Kompany. Currently on 44 points after 16 games, a win in the next could see Kompany get 47 and surpass his former manager. Told about this potential record breaking moment ahead of the Bundesliga clash against FC Köln, Vincent Kompany immediately dismissed comparisons with Pep in a serious tone: “I don’t want to compare myself to Pep because that’s impossible; it’s a losing battle.”
Furthermore, he reasoned, the achievement would not be his.
“And I can understand that better because I was a player myself and experienced relegations and titles – it’s like a rollercoaster,” Kompany explained, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “From that experience, I know it will come down to the players. Therefore, such a record is completely irrelevant to me.”
Still, the players may want to write themselves into the record books. It will not be as important as securing another three points that will go to trying to win the league title this season, but any added motivation can surely only be a boon.
