Jonas Urbig is not hiding his ambitions when it comes to the German national team, but the Bayern Munich goalkeeper is taking a refreshingly grounded approach to his international future.
Speaking about his experience with Germany, Urbig made it clear that he has an immediate goal and will work hard to achieve it.
“I was proud and happy to be able to go to the World Cup. It meant a lot to me. I was called up for the first time for a training camp in March, but unfortunately had to leave again straight
away because of an injury. It is certainly an incentive for me to establish myself as a regular option. But my attitude is also very clear here: I don’t concern myself with what might happen someday. I prefer to focus on what I can influence every day,” Urbig told Säbener 51 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Simply being part of Germany’s World Cup squad was already a significant milestone for Urbig, especially given his age and rapid rise over the past year. Now, the next challenge is turning that experience into a permanent place in the national-team picture.
Urbig knows there is competition for the goalkeeper position, but rather than looking too far ahead, he is choosing to focus on the things directly within his control — training, improving, competing and performing for Bayern Munich.
That mentality could serve him extremely well.
If Urbig continues to develop at Bayern Munich and earns more opportunities at club level, another Germany call-up could be the natural next step. For now, however, he is keeping his eyes firmly on the present.
