It has been a very news-heavy few days for the Ohio State football team. First, over the weekend, it was announced that linebacker Sonny Styles would be donning the prestigious
Block “O” jersey this season and would be one of the team’s four captains, joining safety Caleb Downs, wide receiver Brandon Inniss, and offensive tackle Austin Siereveld.
Then, on Monday, head coach Ryan Day made the announcement that second-year Buckeye Julian Sayin would get the start in the season opener against the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, Aug. 30. While this was the expected outcome since the previous season ended, it does seem like third-year QB Lincoln Kienholz made the competition closer than most people expected.
So, with those news nuggets out of the way, we wanted to check the temperature of Buckeye Nation to see where they stand with OSU’s new quarterback and captains. So, check out the two questions, then scroll down to the survey underneath and vote.
If the answer you want to go with isn’t listed, or you want to expound on your pick, feel free to leave that info in the comments at the bottom of the page.
Question 1: Now that Julian Sayin has been named Ohio State’s starting quarterback, how do you feel about it?
Oftentimes, I feel that quarterback controversies, regardless of who is involved, are fraught with concern, angst, and a general uneasiness. Now, I don’t mean that there is bad blood between competitors, or that there is anything untoward involved in the battles, but the decision of who a team’s starting quarterback is going to be is so important, and so impactful to how a season will play out, that it just naturally elicits emtions that can make players, coaches, and fans a bit uneasy.
While I obviously don’t know if that was the case behind the scenes at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, it sure felt like Sayin vs. Kienholz was unusually calm and even-keeled. I wrote on Monday that while I expected Sayin to be the starter, and that’s the direction that I would go if I were in Days’ shoes, I felt no trepidation about the South Dakota Slinger leading the team, should Kienholz eventually win the spot.
But what about you? Are you nervous about the unproven Saying getting the job? Let us know in our survey below.
Question 2: In addition to Downs, Inniss, Styles, and Siereveld, who do you think should have been OSU’s fifth captain?
Remember the Urban Meyer days, when roughly 1/3 of the Buckeye roster would be named a captain? Well, that era is long gone, as Day has settled on four captains: two on offense and two on defense. While that makes the distinction even more prestigious than it already was, it also means that there are a lot of very deserving Buckeyes who won’t receive the honor.
I have put together a list of six guys who I think could have potentially been in the running, but because of how many talented leaders are in the locker room, I very well might have missed your pick. So check out the survey options, and let me know in the comments who you would add to the mix.
