Bayern Munich supporters made their feelings known on Friday during the team’s 5-1 win over VfB Stuttgart with a banner directed at the club’s rumored plans to sell a 5% stake to Viessmann.
The message from the stands questioned whether Bayern Munich actually needs the additional investment, particularly given the club’s strong financial performance.
“€978 million in revenue and €27.1 million in net profit. A 5% stake sale only for difficult times?”
The banner reflects a broader concern among some supporters
about Bayern Munich potentially giving up another piece of the club despite continuing to operate from a position of financial strength.
Bayern Munich has long placed significant value on its financial independence and the club’s ownership structure. While outside investment can provide additional resources for infrastructure, development and long-term projects, supporters clearly want to understand why selling another 5% stake is necessary.
The timing is especially notable. With nearly €1 billion in revenue and €27.1 million in net profit, the argument from the stands is straightforward: if Bayern Munich is financially healthy, why does it need to sell another portion of the club?
At the same time, the potential Viessmann deal could provide Bayern Munich with additional capital without relying on traditional debt financing. The club would presumably see strategic value in the partnership beyond the immediate cash injection.
Still, the banner shows that not every supporter is convinced.
For some Bayern Munich fans, this is not simply about the money. It is about protecting the identity, independence and ownership principles that have defined the club for generations.
