After Tuesday’s training camp practice for the Kansas City Chiefs in St. Joe, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke to local media at the podium.
As he discussed what he wants to see more from his defense moving forward this preseason, he reiterated a point he has made previously in camp: he wants to see more physicality, more violence from his defense.
It’s hard to simulate in practice, but as he spoke, it was clear that the Chiefs’ offense has been putting the defense in more positions to need
physicality in this year’s camp as compared to previous seasons.
“Yesterday, I didn’t like the fact that a lot of run plays — and we’re getting a lot more run plays than we used to — a lot of those run plays were going right down the middle of our defense,” Spagnuolo said.
If you listen to all of the coaches’ press conferences, it always stands out that the defensive coach is the most unbuttoned about telling local media how he feels about his team or how certain players are performing.
On Tuesday, he all but confirmed the much-anticipated shift from Kansas City’s offense to feature the run game and running back Kenneth Walker.
