When former Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz opted to sign with Liverpool instead of Bayern Munich during the summer, it was clear that the Germany international was going to open himself to more criticism under the bright lights and heightened scrutiny of the Premier League — and the English media.
Well…welcome to the party, pal!
As such, Liverpool manager Arne Slot hit the mic to defend this charge and said that some of the criticism was being levied by pundits who are fans of other clubs.
“There
is so much focus on our signings not least the pundits who maybe support other teams,” Slot said (as captured by This is Anfield). “There is so much focus on Florian but the ones who were already here haven’t scored four goals or had 12 assists.
“He’s been part of a team, Florian, that is on top of the league and that won four games. He’s part of the team that won against Newcastle, that won against Arsenal, where the team last season didn’t win away at Newcastle and didn’t win at home against Arsenal. It’s the way you want to look at it. Yes, he hasn’t scored four goals or 12 assists in the first four games – but for me, that’s down to the quality we faced. He’s part of a team that is number one in the league at the moment.”
So far, Wirtz has one assist in six games across all competitions.
