Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah has already played his final game as a Red and he may have today added his final World Cup game for Egypt to that, as the 34-year-old wing legend and his country were beaten 3-2 by Lionel Messi and Argentina in the most painful way possible.
Egypt had gone up by two goals via Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko and had a third ruled out due to a soft foul in the buildup. Salah had key touches in the buildup to both and when the Round of 16 tie hit the 70 minute mark it felt
as though The Pharaohs were certain to win and advance.
Argentina, though, dug deep in the final stretch, getting goals from Cristian Romero and Messi to draw the game level before scoring a 93rd minute heartbreaker through Enzo Fernandez to the South Americans through to the next round and the African representatives packing.
For Egypt, it was a result reminiscent of so many Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, where they have gained something of a reputation for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. For Argentina, it’s a dream result that keeps their hopes of a repeat alive for at least another round.
Up next they will face the winner of Switzerland and ex-Red Luis Diaz’ Colombia in a July 11th quarter-final in Kansas City. The winner of that match will then face either Norway or England in the semi-final.
