Morning A’s fans!
Starting pitcher Luis Severino has gone 23 days since his last appearance on the mound, instead working his way back from a strained left oblique. His first year with the Athletics hasn’t been as smooth as everyone had hoped. In 24 starts he’s sporting a 4.82 ERA in what’s been a roller coaster of a season. Sevy was at least taking the ball every fifth day and providing innings though and for a young A’s team without many established starters that’s a huge role to fill. The Athletics’
starting rotation options were already dwindling at the time of his injury and they’re getting even more desperate now.
Thankfully it seems like Sevy is steadily working his way back to a quick return, one that might not even require a rehab stint:
Getting Severino back and starting every fifth day down the final stretch would be helpful for a beleaguered starting rotation. The depth that the A’s had accumulated at the start of the year has been used up to such a degree that maybe the A’s feel like they can’t afford to let Sevy get a rehab assignment under his belt. Unlikely for a grizzled veteran like Severino and he’s really only missed three or so starts so far.
And maybe this time off will give the 31-year-old righty a chance for a sort of reset before finishing his first season with the A’s strong. It’s been an inconsistent season at best, a bit of a letdown considering the massive investment the team made in him this offseason. He had been pitching well over his final few appearances before his injury list placement. We shouldn’t expect to see him again anytime soon with September 1st approaching and offering a chance for expanded rosters, we just need to hope the starting rotation doesn’t lose any more arms and can hold up until his return.
Have a great day everyone!
