Former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers has left ESPN to become president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. a multi-billion dollar equity firm
that has investments throughout the sports industry. Myers had previously been consulting with the Washington Commanders, who were owned by the firm’s co-founder Josh Harris, and he will not take a more direct role in broader operations. Harris and his co-founder David Blitzer have ownership stakes in more than 15 professional franchises. Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment is the managing partner of the Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia’s expansion WNBA team, and New Jersey Devils. Schefter’s report also noted that Myers will remain involved with the Commanders as well
Myers has long shown an interest in sports outside of basketball, even prior to consulting with the Commanders. It seems the former NBA agent turned general manager was drawn out of his media career by the prospect of working with a wide range of franchises. He will now have a direct role in running a NBA, NHL, and NFL team all at once. Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment also has a minority stake in Crystal Palace F.C. (Premier League) and Joe Gibbs Racing (NASCAR), creating opportunities for Myers to play a role there as well.
Given his title, Myers seems more likely to have a role that oversees all operations but is less involved in micromanagement of individual franchises, which would align with the reasons he left the Warriors in the first place. That said, it’s worth wondering if the broad title was simply a way to justify paying him an even loftier salary while focusing on the league he knows best: the NBA.
The 76ers, after all, seem stuck between a rock and a hard place and it’s worth wondering if Daryl Morey’s tenure as the team’s president of basketball operations could be nearing it’s end. Coincidentally, Myers is now the boss of Morey, his biggest rival executive during his Warriors tenure. We’ll see if this partnership with Myers works better for Morey than when his Rockets faced Myers’ Warriors.
