ONE 173 went down this weekend in Tokyo, Japan and featured a whole bunch of martial arts action across several styles, from MMA to kickboxing to Muay Thai and submission grappling.
Five championship belts
were on the line, and we’ll be sharing highlights from those fights below. But we wanted to start our focus on this event with the Shinya Aoki vs. Hiroyuki Tetsuka fight. Even at 42 years old, Aoki continues to generate interest and controversy in his fights and his ONE 173 bout was no different.
During their faceoff, Tetsuka got right in Aoki’s face and started pushing him backwards. Aoki responded with a slick trip throw that dumped Tetsuka on his face.
We’d score that encounter for Aoki, but Tetsuka would get his revenge on fight night. In the second round, he hit Aoki with a massive body shot that dropped the submission specialist to the canvas up against the cage. Tetsuka would then unleash a torrent of punches and even some big knees, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
Other big winners include Superbon, who unified the ONE featherweight kickboxing title with a scrappy performance against Masaaki Noiri. Takeru Segawa also had a big night, knocking down Denis Puric four times en route to a second round stoppage.
