The San Francisco 49ers and Washington Commanders are set to do battle tonight on Monday Night Football, unless Joe Buck and Troy Aikman decide to stage a battle during the telecast. Too soon? Anyway, the 49ers look to push their record to 6-0, while the Commanders are trying to steady the ship with a win as the NFC East continues to flounder.
A loss could push Washington into fire sale mode, and GM Adam Peters stated the team is making and fielding calls, but the trade deadline is less than a month
away, and nothing is imminent. The 49ers are no doubt in the trade market for an EDGE, DT, or WR, if not all three.
Let’s have some fun and pick one player from Washington on offense and defense to stay in Santa Clara.
Defense: DT Daron Payne
The veteran defensive tackle would solidify the 49ers’ defensive line and, even at age 29, is still producing at a high level. With 15 pressures, a sack, three QB hits, 11 hurries, and eight defensive snaps, pairing Payne with Osa Odighizuwa would be a dream fit. The rotation of defensive linemen would be death for opposing offenses, as each wave would be fresh due to the depth.
The former 13th overall pick would be perfect with the current defensive line and Raheem Morris. A couple more losses and Nov. 10th could be the day Payne is a 49er.
Offense: WR Terry McLaurin
Selfishly, I need this one to happen more than anyone else. McLaurin jumped off the tape at Ohio State and at the Senior Bowl, coached by Kyle Shanahan. There is a multiverse where the 49ers draft Deebo Samuel and McLaurin in the 2019 NFL Draft. I won’t mention who the 49ers selected over Terry, but it still stings.
As far as the player in 2026, McLaurin isn’t the same player from years past. However, as the number-two option? Mike Evans and McLaurin would be a nightmare for any defense. McLaurin has missed a game in 2026, but only 26 targets and 14 catches are malpractice. Free Terry and let’s chase this chip.
