Bayern Munich’s 4-1 victory over Atalanta Bergamo on the night, following the 6-1 triumph in Italy, led to a 10-2 victory over the Italian side in the Champions League Round of 16. Bayern therefore progress to the quarterfinals, where they will face Real Madrid, an opponent they have not defeated since 2012.
Bayern’s CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, took some time to enjoy the victory on the day.
“It was an absolutely professional performance tonight,” he analyzed, as captured by Bayern’s official website.
“The team showed that they take every match seriously. Everyone noticed that they wanted to win convincingly. Credit goes to Vincent Kompany for that. They impressed again today, which breeds confidence for the next matches. It’s great that Vincent also brought on the two young players. We have a lot of potential, we’re doing good work in the academy.
Then Dreesen took some time to address the big, white elephant in the room.
“FC Bayern versus Real Madrid is an epic clash. We’ll see what happens. We’ve gone out to them in the recent knockout meetings, often in unfortunate circumstances. It’s time to change that and get to the semi-finals. The players are really looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to two exciting matches – it’s good that the first leg is in Madrid. There are no favorites, it will come down to the performance on the night and you probably also need a bit of luck. For now we hope that everyone comes back fit from the international break,” said Dreesen.
Last year, of course, Bayern’s defense was devastated as both Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies suffered season ending (and beyond) injuries during the March international break. Fingers crossed things will go better than that this year.
