Newcastle United has already started assessing possible additions for future transfer windows, with midfield depth and long-term squad planning taking Matthias Jaissle’s focus.
Amid the international break, TEAMtalk reported that Newcastle is among seven Premier League clubs closely monitoring Lyon midfielder Tyler Morton after his rapid development in France.
“TEAMtalk has already revealed that Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion have all been keeping close tabs on Morton
as his performances have continued to impress,” the report says. “We can now confirm that Newcastle, Sunderland and Everton have also been watching the midfielder closely, adding three more Premier League clubs to an increasingly competitive picture around his future. Former side Liverpool now make it seven!”
Morton left Liverpool for Lyon in the summer of 2025 for an initial £10 million, potentially rising to £15 million, with Liverpool retaining a 20 percent sell-on clause. The England midfielder has made 53 appearances for Lyon, contributing three goals and three assists.
The 23-year-old has since established himself as a major part of Paulo Fonseca’s team in Ligue 1, with no other Lyon player accumulating more minutes through the club’s opening 10 competitive matches this season.
Morton’s ability to operate centrally and contribute immediately is attracting attention from several Premier League recruitment departments, including Newcastle’s.
Any January move, however, could prove challenging for Newcastle or any other suitor. Lyon currently relies heavily on Morton, while the level of Premier League competition around him continues to grow.
Liverpool, meanwhile, represents another potential obstacle in a transfer. TEAMtalk reported that the Anfield club has continued monitoring its former academy player, with sources describing Morton as someone Liverpool is “keeping tabs on.” A return is possible, although there is no indication that an official move has been made.
