San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided injury updates ahead of Wednesday’s practice. The following players won’t practice today:
K Eddy Pineiro (sick)
WR De’Zhaun Stribling (ankle)
Nick Bosa (rest)
Dre Greenlaw (rest)
Christian McCaffrey (rest)
These players will be limited:
Kyle Juszczyk (finger)
George Kittle (Achilles)
Khalid Kareem (shoulder)
Shanahan said the team will place Stribling on the Injured Reserve list later this week after he needed ankle surgery. Stribling is expected
to miss about 10 weeks. Shanahan wasn’t “exactly sure” about the timetable but said it’d be “close to 10 weeks.”
Shanahan was asked if Stribling exacerbated his injury when he went back onto the field. Here’s how the 49ers head coach responded:
“No, it just didn’t check out as an Achilles. It didn’t check out as a certain ankle, the stuff that they did. They went through the normal protocols. He was past them, but when he ran a certain route, it really showed. The one you guys saw on TV that he collapsed on. It was going to happen regardless.”
Shanahan didn’t share the same optimism for tight end Jake Tonges, who will miss the remainder of the season with an MCL injury.
There may be some concerns about the 49ers’ recovery process after their trip from Australia. Shanahan said he did not modify the upcoming week of practice:
“No, we didn’t have to modify it, just because we got those off days. We had a bonus practice on Monday, which really wasn’t one. The coaches didn’t even go out. We met and did all the film with the guys, like a normal Monday.
Dustin, the strength staff, just worked those guys out. And then it was normal today, so we’re back to a truly normal Wednesday. It actually is out normal schedule now because our times were a little bit different in Australia with the travel to the practice field and stuff. So, it’s real normal now.
Shanahan said he “felt like crap all weekend.” He said it took a couple of days, but he was good by Monday.
There wasn’t a consensus among the players. It took some a couple of days, while others felt fine right away. According to Shanahan, “we’re definitely good by now.”
