With the Gian Piero Gasperini-Claudio Ranieri meldorama firmly in the rearview, I’d dare say things have grown quite dull in the Romaverse. With no backroom controversies to discuss and no match until Monday evening, we’re left grasping at straws. Earlier this week, we discussed Paulo Dybala’s rumored agreement with Boca Juniors (which was quickly denied or at least politely ignored by all parties), and as we head into the weekend, the future of Roma’s other Argentinian maestro has come into question.
Matías Soulé may not be a household name in football circles, but the 23-year-old forward from Mar del Plata has been a key contributor for Roma since arriving from Juventus in 2024. With 12 goals and 12 assists in roughly 4,800 minutes, Soulé has been the club’s most productive attacker over the past two years—until Donyell Malen’s arrival, of course.
However, despite that production (or perhaps because of it), Soulé could find himself on the Financial Fair Play chopping block this summer. With Roma facing a reported €80 million capital gains benchmark that must be met by June 30th, the club will have to make some difficult decisions this summer. According to the I, Soulé is among several players the club could sacrifice to remain compliant with FFP guidelines, joining the likes of Evan Ndicka, Manu Koné, Mile Svilar and Niccolo Pisilli. The Corriere speculates that Soulé could move abroad, as he’s currently drawing interest from several unnamed Premiership clubs.
This is nothing new for Roma fans, of course, but Soulé is such a great connective piece; this would be a tough pill to swallow.
