Newcastle United now has money to spend after selling Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali for a combined €188 million, but the club’s plan is built around volume, youth and upside rather than marquee names at premium prices.
Sky Sports reported on Monday that Newcastle could make as many as six to eight signings this summer as sporting director Ross Wilson leads his first window at St. James’ Park.
“This could be the biggest window under Eddie Howe since that first January when he was appointed,” Sky
Sports reported. “The remit is to sign young, hungry players and to have a full reset of the squad.”
Bazoumana Toure has already arrived from Hoffenheim in a deal worth around €49 million, and former Ajax wonderkid Sean Stour will follow him for a reported €27 million.
Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi is also a key target and is viewed as having some similar qualities to Tonali, with his transfer looming.
“Johan Manzamabi, the target at Freiburg, for instance, looks like he has similar attributes to Tonali, while Toure is a Gordon replacement,” Sky Sports reported.
Newcastle also wants another goalkeeper, with James Trafford still high on the list despite Ewen Jaouen’s arrival, as the latter is seen more as a backup for now.
Right back is another priority after Kieran Trippier’s exit and Tino Livramento’s weak injury history and potential transfer out of Tyneside, while the club could add left-back if only to give Lewis Hall some relief.
Finally, Sky Sports also reported that Newcastle wants a striker after Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade failed to justify last summer’s major investment, although no new reports of their discussed sales has emerged of late.
