Earlier on Friday there was a report (BFW covered the story here) which indicated that Real Madrid was going to make a massive offer for a “Champions League player.”
In that story, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez said that his club was prepared to launch a €150 million proposal for its desired target. When asked if the player was Bayern Munich star Michael Olise, Perez outright denied that it was the Frenchman.
“He’s a great player, but it’s not him,” Perez said.
Clear-cut, right? Maybe not.
Another report states that Perez might have been fibbing.
Telefoot (as captured by The Telegraph’s Jason Burt via @iMiaSanMia) is reporting that Perez was, indeed, talking about Olise:
Real Madrid will launch an audacious €150m bid for Michael Olise if Florentino Pérez is reelected as club president.
In the exchanges with the media, Pérez publicly denied that Olise was the target, but @TeleFootball understands the Bayern winger is exactly who he was talking about.
There is some interest from Madrid in João Neves but it is understood that Olise is Pérez’s priority if he wins the vote.
Whether Olise can be prised away from Bayern remains to be seen. Bayern will certainly fight to keep the French international, who has a contract until 2029. But José Mourinho has made it clear he wants Olise.
Bayern Munich has shown no willingness to sell Olise, nor has the player show an inclination to leave the club. So, what should fans believe? It is hard to tell. Surely, it is conceivable that Real Madrid would want Olise and could make that type of bid, but there are other big fish out there for Perez to hang his presidency on.
Paris Saint-Germain’s João Neves and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland are both players who have been previously linked to Real Madrid, but it could just be a case of Perez making big promises that he might not be able to keep.
