Newcastle United’s summer transfer work has continued across multiple positions, with Eddie Howe’s squad still requiring vast defensive depth after a series of free-agent exits and injury concerns.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle and Everton, among other clubs, are both eyeing a move for Lyon defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles this summer.
“Everton are among a host of Premier League clubs exploring a move for former Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles, with TEAMtalk understanding the Toffees have registered
their interest as they continue their search for defensive reinforcements this summer,” the report reads. “TEAMtalk can reveal that Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Fulham have also made checks on Maitland-Niles‘ situation as clubs assess opportunities in the market ahead of the new campaign.”
The former Arsenal player has rebuilt his career in France, but Lyon could reportedly be forced to consider offers despite preferring to keep him.
Maitland-Niles’ versatility could appeal to Howe, as he has played at right-back, wing-back and in midfield during his career, giving him value as a squad option and fitting the gaffer’s appreciation for versatile players.
Newcastle have a need in that area of the pitch after Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth left the club, while Tino Livramento is recovering from a calf injury picked up with England and it’s probable that he is sold this summer depending on the offers arriving at the Magpies’ table.
The report states that Lyon would be open to a deal if the right offer arrives, but for now, neither Newcastle nor Everton have been reported to have made a formal bid.
