Newcastle United is dealing with a major injury concern after Anthony Elanga missed the 4-1 defeat at Leeds United, leaving Matthias Jaissle without one of his most productive attackers and a bona fide starter right before a weeks-long break.
The Swedish FA has confirmed that Elanga will miss all of Sweden’s upcoming Nations League matches against Romania and Poland because of the injury. The winger is instead expected to undergo another MRI scan next week as Newcastle attempts to determine the extent
of the problem.
“A number of names are missing and several are due to injuries,” the Swedish FA statement read. “Isak Hien, who was injured during the World Cup, is still not available. Anthony Elanga has suffered an injury in the past week and will therefore miss the meeting.”
Elanga will also miss Newcastle’s home game against Hull City on Saturday, with the winger now set to miss at least four matches when Sweden’s two internationals are baked into the equation.
The concern is that the absence could extend significantly beyond that initial period. That would represent a significant blow for Newcastle after Elanga started the season strongly. The winger scored in the club’s opening two Premier League matches against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur before suffering the issue that kept him out at Elland Road.
