It was exactly the kind of conference opener Arizona needed from catcher Sydney Stewart. Stewart paced the Wildcats offensively in their three run-rule victories over BYU last week, earning herself the Big 12 Player of the Week honors.
Stewart went 4 for 6, drew 3 walks, and had a sacrifice fly in her 10 plate appearances. She had an on-base percentage of .700 and a slugging percentage of 1.830, giving her an OPS of 2.530 over the three games. She scored 4 runs and led the league with 8 RBI. She tied
her career high with 5 RBI in the series opener.
Over the season, Arizona’s All-American has a .400 average and .494 on-base percentage, both of which rank fourth on the team. Her 1.417 OPS, .923 slugging percentage, 8 home runs, and 43 RBI lead the Wildcats. The RBI also lead the Big 12. She is top 10 in the league in OPS, slugging, and home runs. She has drawn 13 walks. That trails only Grace Jenkins on the squad.
It is Stewart’s first Big 12 Player of the Week honor of her career. It is Arizona’s first weekly award this season.
Stewart and her team travel to Lubbock, Tex. this week to take on this week’s Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, NiJaree Canady and her Texas Tech Red Raiders.
