Newcastle United travels to the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday for its Premier League Matchday 6 fixture against Coventry City after three weeks off the schedule.
Matthias Jaissle’s side enters the match following a 2-1 home victory over Hull City before the international break. Joe Willock and Lewis Hall scored inside the opening seven minutes as Newcastle recovered from its disastrous 4-1 defeat at Leeds United the previous game.
The Magpies have collected eight points from their opening
five league matches and sit in the top half of the table, but NUFC shouldn’t rest on its non-existent laurels. Newcastle has conceded 22 shots against Hull and kept only one clean sheet in the Premier League this season. That said, things look promising heading into Monday’s matchup, as the Magpies have won their last seven meetings with Coventry, most recently in 2010.
Jaissle expects three or four injured players to return, including Joelinton and Nico Gonzalez. Jacob Ramsey, Amar Dedic and Anthony Elanga are among those who could also be available, albeit questionable, while backup goalie Ewen Jaouen is out long-term with a hamstring injury.
Coventry, meanwhile, enters the game following a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest, its first Premier League win since April 2001. Frank Lampard’s side had lost its opening four league matches without scoring and remains the division’s lowest-scoring team.
The recently-promoted club has also lost both home league fixtures this season. Milan van Ewijk could return from injury, but Haji Wright, Luke Woolfenden, Josh Eccles and Aurele Amenda remain unavailable. Taiwo Awoniyi is suspended.

On Joelinton’s importance…
“He has qualities on the ball and out of possession. He is a leader – his body language shows that.
“We need warriors in the team. We are really happy to have him back training with us.”

On Coventry City…
“Every team is capable to win against every opponent. Coventry have the quality.
“They won their last match, they have confidence after winning that game. They will have momentum.
“If we perform at our best, then it will be difficult to beat us. We want to make it as difficult for them as possible.”
On injuries and players returning after the international break…
“They have returned. I have allowed some of them an extra day off. We will have a full group in tomorrow.
“We are hopeful there will be three or four back from the nine missing against Hull City.
“Ewen Jaouen will be out for two months with a hamstring injury.
“Joey is progressing well, he is doing better. We need to be smart in our load management.”
On getting ready to return to action…
“I am happy we are back. The long break was a little bit unusual, but we are all happy football is back.
“We want to improve, we want to develop. From tomorrow onwards, we will have everyone back with us training and can align ahead of Monday.”
