LOUISVILLE SHOULD HAVE AN AGGRESSIVE GAME PLAN ON DEFENSE
Virginia Tech has one of the more inconsistent offenses in the country. This is mostly due to the erratic play of Kyron Drones at quarterback, who
has a tendency to be inaccurate as a passer and ineffective as a runner. However, Drones can turn it on at any moment and beat you with his arm or with his legs. This is why the Cards should have an aggressive game plan, in my opinion.
Blitzing Drones in passing situations is a no-brainer to me with how inconsistent he is, and I think that getting his feet moving is the best way to get him to throw the ball into a danger area for a turnover. I also think that the best aspect of Tech’s offense is their running game with their two strong running backs. Louisville should be looking for ways to make Drones beat them with his arm with throws down the field. He can complete the big throws because he has a very strong arm, but he is inconsistent enough that it’s worth the risk.
IT’S STILL TIME FOR LOUISVILLE TO GET A BLOWOUT WIN
Jeff Brohm’s teams have played down to competition since he arrived on campus. The big wins have been great, but when they’ve had an opportunity to run away with a blowout win, he hasn’t delivered. Brohm has 5 wins at this point, where his team dominated an overmatched opponent, and while a win is a win, being dominant is how they get the team away from the lackluster performances that lead to the letdown losses.
Tech was forced to fire their head coach early in the year after being blown out by Old Dominion. While they have played better as of late, this is still a team that does not have the athletes Louisville does. That’s especially true on the defensive side of the ball, where Jeff Brohm should be able to scheme against. Louisville couldn’t throw the ball against a bad Boston College defense. They get another chance to take advantage of a bad defense this weekend. They need to do so.
VIRGINIA TECH WILL LEAN ON ITS RUN GAME
The key to the Hokies’ win last week over Cal last week was a sudden reliance on their running game, which was led by their running backs. Marcellous Hawkins had his season high in carries with 21, and he ran for 167 yards on the night. Terion Stewart had 14 carries, which is one shy of his season high. While he didn’t put up a lot of yardage, he spelled Hawkins and helped wear down the defense with his power running.
The wildcard for Tech is Drones, who had 21 carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns on the night. The Hokies will make an effort to deploy a similar game plan against the Cards after having so much success last weekend. Louisville continues to have a stingy run defense, but BC had a similar plan of running the ball, even though they didn’t have great success. It opened up some play action passes, which is what VT will be looking for as well.
MILLER MOSS HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET ON TRACK
Miller Moss had another poor outing last week against a Boston College team that hadn’t stopped anyone this year. Moss only completed 55% of his passes, and he failed to take advantage of the 317 yards the rushing attack put up. He also threw another inexplicable interception in scoring position that killed a promising drive. It was his worst performance of the year against the worst defense the Cards have faced since Eastern Kentucky.
Virginia Tech has the second-worst defense the Cards will face since Eastern Kentucky, and Moss will have an opportunity to have a good performance to get things back to what we saw against Miami. He also had three straight 300-yard games before the Miami game with 5 touchdown passes. He can be better than what we saw last weekend, and VT would be the best opportunity to really have a big game as a passer.
