The poor keep getting poorer. The Carolina Panthers have placed cornerback Akayleb Evans on injured reserve. He is the third of four cornerbacks on the team’s two-deep depth chart from the start of the season to end up on that list.
Evans play compared to Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson has been nothing short of the drop off a very tall cliff, but he was who the team had determined was their best option. Tonight,
against the Green Bay Packers, the Panthers were already planning to start a practice squad elevation, Marco Wilson, who was signed to the practice squad just three weeks ago.
Things are dire. Maybe Wilson will be better against the run than Evans was last week when he was instrumental in the Panthers surrendering 258 yards on the ground. He is unlikely to be an upgrade in every phase of the game, however, so let’s not pretend that Evans being hurt is going to be some kind of addition by subtraction.
Now that Evans has been placed on IR, the team has also signed cornerback Malcolm DeWalt IV to the active roster from their practice squad. DeWalt just joined the practice squad last week after having been a healthy scratch and ultimately cut from the Atlanta Falcons after six weeks.
