The Pittsburgh Steelers dropped a bombshell on the NFL on Tuesday when it was announced that Mike Tomlin has stepped down as head coach after 19 seasons. This came after the Steelers lost to the Houston Texans in the wild card round of the playoffs 30-6, marking the fifth consecutive playoff game the Steelers have lost by double-digits, which is an NFL record.
Many fans have been calling for a change at head coach for years, and a large portion of the fanbase is undoubtedly happy that a new coach will
be under the headset in 2026. And if Andrew Fillipponi is to be believed, so, too, is at least one Steelers star.
Speaking on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, Fillipponi claims that a source tells him there is a high-profile name on the Steelers roster that is happy Tomlin is gone.
“This person said to me, ‘I know of one very, very, very high-profile Steeler who was rooting for this to happen,’” Fillipponi said.
While it’s unknown who that player is, one thing that will be very interesting to see as the offseason unfolds is what veteran players are still around going into the season in 2026. Guys like Patrick Queen, who made it clear that Tomlin was a big reason he came to Pittsburgh, may want a change of scenery. Plus, with a new head coach, perhaps the Steelers will finally embrace a rebuild and offload some veterans with big contracts.
