It all comes down to this.
The Guardians and White Sox will meet tonight at 8PM ET at Progressive Field for the 18th time this season, with Chicago having won 9 and Cleveland having won 8 so far.
The Guardians will start Gavin Williams two days after he closed out game four in Chicago. The White Sox will start Sean Burke who has absolutely dominated the Guardians this season with an ERA around 1. It should be interesting.
Keys to the Game:
Figure out Sean Burke: You know what they say… sixth time’s the charm? The Guardians
will be going home tonight if they can’t find a way to hit Sean Burke’s four-seamer which has been haunting them throughout the 2026 season. They need to maintain a good approach at the plate that they have shown the past two games and make him work. Each team is chomping at the bit to get into the other’s bullpen as soon as possible, so the Guardians need to win that race as well as scoring a few off Burke.
Manage the Pitching Chaos Well: A lot of debate about how much Stephen Vogt has used Cade Smith so far. He will need to justify his “step on their neck” approach by managing his pitchers well today and getting the game where Smith doesn’t have to get more than an inning’s worth of work. How quickly does Griffin relieve Williams? Does he lift pitchers with two outs in an inning to have the flexibility to make moves around the three-batter rule?
Stay Hot, Jose and Pat: Jose Ramirez and Patrick Bailey have been hot and carried the Guardians’ offense. Maybe we are sitting on the Steven Kwan game, or the Brayan Rocchio game, or the Chase DeLauter game, but if Jose and Bailey can continue to rake, the Guardians need to be able to continue to rely on the bats who have been there to get them back to Cleveland.
Be the First Team to Take Advantage of Homefield: The home teams have left their fans disappointed four times this series. Time to break that trend and feel the support and love from a sold-out Cleveland crowd tonight and ride it to the ALCS.
Someone in the comments or on Twitter will now say “Score more runs than the White Sox.” Yes, that is the key. I think the Guardians will need to score a fair amount tonight to win and they will be facing a pitcher who has straight-up owned them. The task is a tall one, but this team doesn’t back down from challenges. Go, Guardians!
