If you missed the latest episode of the Hike’s Peak podcast, we talked to New Mexico star linebacker Jaxton Eck about his historic first season in Albuquerque. Don’t worry if you haven’t gotten to it yet,
because the video version has just been uploaded! You can find that below.
Graduating from Brookings High School in 2022, Eck joined his father, Jason, at Idaho and immediately became one of the fastest rising tacklers in the FCS. After posting 37 tackles as a freshman, Jaxton earned All-American honors for his 134 tackles the following season, and followed Jason to his new head coaching gig at New Mexico.
One year into his time with the Lobos, and Jaxton has solidified himself as arguably the best linebacker in the Mountain West. He took home co-Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading his squad to a 9-4 record, their best since 2016. His 128 tackles were 9th most in the country, and reached double digits seven times.
We asked Jaxton about everything from preseason expectations, transfer portal drama, his dad’s hilarious metaphors, and the unsung heroes of New Mexico’s defense! Find more essential Mountain West analysis and news every Tuesday on the Hike’s Peak Podcast. Enjoy, and thank you to Jaxton Eck for taking the time to hike up the mountain to talk with us!
