All it takes is a little focus and a lot of luck (thanks Vandy for pulling out the rare 7 point win in overtime), but just like that Best Bets has found itself back in the winners column. Sure, the last month has been tough, but it’s November now and as Gary Pinkel used to say (maybe, I think) “legends are made in November.” Or something like that. Anyway, Best Bets went 2-1 last week and our picks went 3-3 overall so we’re back over .500 at 17-16 and 33-33 overall. We’re carrying this newfound momentum into Week 12, so let’s get to it!
Best Bets
Clemson @ Louisville (-3.5)
I’ve done pretty well picking bad vibes games this season and this one is pretty peak “bad vibes.” Louisville is coming off a terrible loss to Cal which most likely will keep them out of the ACC Championship game and a shot at the playoffs. Clemson is finishing up a complete disaster of a season and will need to win two out of their last three just to make a bowl game. I think Louisville is objectively a much better team and they are at home, so I’m taking the Cardinals to win by a couple scores.
Oklahoma @ Alabama (-6.5)
Oklahoma has a really stout defense, but their offense has been bad at best since John Mateer came back from his hand surgery. This game should be fun and competitive throughout, but I think Alabama’s offense will score just enough points to put this one away late and win by around 10 points. Plus, you know the Tide are itching to get some payback after getting smashed last year in Norman; a loss that kept them out of the playoffs.
Florida @ Ole Miss (-15.5)
Speaking of revenge games, here’s another one. Ole Miss blew it in Gainsville last year, knocking themselves out of the playoffs as well. Florida has already just about thrown in the towel, getting blasted by a bad Kentucky last week. I expect them to continue to mail it in this week in Oxford while a motivated Rebels team looks to rack up a big win and further position themselves ahead of other SEC teams looking to qualify for the playoffs (like Texas, who has a Florida loss on their resume.) I think this one will be a blow out.
Worth a look
Virginia (+6.5) @ Duke
Both teams are coming off terrible losses in what is an absolute train wreck of an ACC championship race. The winner of this game will all but guarantee a birth in the championship game as they will have a major leg up in any weird tiebreaking scenarios that might arise. This game is in Durham but I think Virginia is actually a better team. I’m not sure they’ll win outright, but I do think they’ll keep it within a touchdown one way or another.
Memphis @ East Carolina (-2.5)
Memphis has thoroughly dropped the ball in a season where they had a clear path to earning the G5 bid to the playoffs. Notice a theme here with Best Bets this week? They just lost their last shot at a bid by losing at home to Tulane last week. Now they travel to a very motivated East Carolina, where the Pirates have a legitimate shot at earning a birth in the AAC Championship game with a win. I don’t think they’ll win by a ton, but Memphis doesn’t have much to play for and the Pirates do.
Texas @ Georgia (-5.5)
Sure, the Texas offense has looked much better the last six quarters than they have the previous 40. But Georgia’s offense has looked great all season. The game is in Athens and Georgia doesn’t lose in Athens, despite a couple close calls recently. I think they are done messing around at home and the Longhorns give them perfect motivation to step up their game. The Bulldogs win by at least a touchdown.
