68’ – EVERTON LEAD! Barry with a spanking finish! Thomas with a huge error playing a ball across his backline and KDH pounces on it, playing in Barry who hammered a shot past Tzolakis! 2-1 to the Blues!
66’ – Everton’s first sub will be Tyrique George on for Johnson.
64’ – It’s all Everton right now as they are hemming Hull in, but there remains the danger of the counter. Hull making three changes, and it’ll be a familiar face coming on. Iroegbunam, Belloumi and Stroud on with Gelhardt, Crooks and Giles
going off.
59’ – Chance!! Grealish plays in Branthwaite on the overlap, his low cross beats Tzolakis and Barry is unmarked.. and he completely whiffs on it!! Goodness, the ball went through his legs with the goal gaping!
55’ – Another Johnson cross is cleared for a corner, ball was headed straight for Barry’s foot. KDH corner is long, and partly cleared. Grealish passes it back to AMN who puts in a deep cross and the unmarked KDH pops up to head it down and past Tzolakis!! It’s 1-1!! AMN makes up for his mistake!
53’ – Johnson cross fizzed into the box and it’s Barry, oh no straight at Tzolakis.
52’ – Branthwaite cuts out a cross, and it’s a corner. Corner is cleared but Hull continue to press. Momentum has well and truly changed.
48’ – Urgh, Hull lead. McBurnie skinned Branthwaite in midfield and then Thomas fed the ball to Gelhardt with an inexplicably poor tackle from Maitland-Niles letting the Hull player through on goal. Pickford was off his line in a flash but Gelhardt dinked his finish perfectly into the far corner, 1-0 to Hull.
47’ – Both sides coughing up the ball too easily when getting pressed high.
46’ – Second half underway, no changes to either side.
Halftime Thoughts – Everton have been the better side here, and you could argue they deserve to be ahead.
45+4’ – Now Johnson has the ball on the right, cuts back to his left and tries a shot that is deflected wide for a corner. Garner’s ball into the box is straight at Tzolakis and there’s the halftime whistle, still 0-0 here.
45+2’ – Grealish and Armstrong with the give-and-go and the former’s cross into the box is perfect, Barry rises high and then heads over, argh.
45’ – Four minutes plus to be added on. Ball comes to Gelhardt and he gets a foot ahead of Keane on the deep ball but his shot is stopped by Pickford.
Now Grealish has the ball in the box, but he flays his cross well wide.
43’ – Cross into the Everton box, and two big blocks before McBurnie sets up Gelhardt, his curler is fingertipped past the far post for a corner, though there was an Everton player at the post too.
Corner into the six-yard box but Mendy gets under the ball and heads way over.
40’ – Everton with two quick corners, but handled well by the hosts and now McBurnie breaks and Everton have to cut out Thomas’ cross for a corner. Corner is headed away well by Barry at the near post.
Here’s the PL official decision.
34’ – Do we have a goal?! Branthwaite’s corner was perfect into the box, Barry goes for it and Tzolakis spilled it, KDH shot blocked on the line, but Johnson is johnny-on-the-spot and pings it in! Does look like Barry might have fouled the keeper which is why he loses the ball.
VAR recommends Salisbury go to the video screen, and he flags Johnson for offside. Can’t claim to understand how he’s offside but that’s the decision and it stays 0-0.
33’ – Deep Hull cross and AMN plays it safe and puts it out for a corner. The corner is deep and headed back across goal, but Everton stay strong in the six-yard box and can clear their lines before KDH runs away and is fouled.
30’ – Blues trying to play out the back and a misplaced pass from AMN gets Tarky in trouble, foul. Hull put it into the box, Garner gets a head on it before Barry hoofs it away.
Pickford’s clearance is perfect down the left, Barry heads down for KDH and then sets off. Dewsbury-Hall plays it back to him and Barry goes up against Ajayi but it easily overpowered. He does need to work on his strength.
26’ – Everton with excellent build-up starting on the right and the ball ends up with Grealish who tries a left-footed shot, blocked for a corner. Garner’s ball into the box is lovely, Barry heads down wide, and Branthwaite tries to slash it in from a narrow angle and it ends up going out for a throw-in.
25’ – Both teams guilty of giving away the ball in the middle and it’s very choppy right now.
22’ – Oooh poor from KDH giving away the ball and Hull set off on a counter with Gelhardt, luckily he takes a poor shot low and straight at Pickford.
20’ – McBurnie barges in late on Tarkowski and is booked, the crowd are loving this. The two are still getting in each other’s faces, Tarky is the master of the dark arts as always.
18’ – Ainsley Maitland-Niles swings in a cross but Thierno Barry is offside. First attack in ages.
Apparently Brennan Johnson is playing and on the pitch today, can’t say I have seen him though.
17’ – Tarky takes care of two successive crosses. It’s been all Hull for the last ten minutes or so as Everton are struggling to keep possession.
13’ – Crooks hacks down Grealish again and this time he goes in the ref Michael Salisbury’s book, the first of the afternoon.
11’ – Coyle overlap on the Hull right into space and Everton are opened up, his cutback is cleared for a corner by Harrison Armstrong. The corner is cleared by Garner.
Cross from the Everton right now cut out for another corner, this time by captain James Tarkowski. Whipped into the box and Armstrong heads away before the Blues (in white today) can clear the danger.
9’ – Crooks takes down Jack Grealish, free kick. Taken short and ends up with Grealish who is seeing a lot of the ball early on. The on-loan player does well to fire off a shot but it’s tame and Tzolakis collects and immediately hoofs a kick long upfield. Gelhardt collects in front of Keane and holds up possession, allowing a cross into the box that Jordan Pickford collects comfortably.
5’ – Everton free kick. James Garner over it, and he goes for goal but goalie Tzolakis tips it over for a corner that is taken quickly and short, but Hull are aware and clear.
3’ – Hull happy to have Everton keep the ball and hit them on the counter. Two tawdry passes in midfield for Everton cut off by the hosts, the first was deemed a foul on Thomas and the second Gelhardt ran into a blind alley, but not good early signs.
1’ – Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall gets us started here.
Starting Lineups
Everton – Mykolenko is indeed out, but it’s Branthwaite going out wide instead with Keane starting. Moyes sticks with Armstrong in the middle, still no room for Hackney.
Hull City – The hosts have the menacing McBurnie in the lineup.
Match Preview
Everton are back from an extended international break, and get back to league action with a trip to Hull City who sit a point behind them in the table. The Tigers are off to a strong start in the league with wins over Manchester United and Coventry City followed up by draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea.
The big news for the Toffees this week was off the pitch with owners The Friedkin Group stating that the club was up for sale. Meanwhile though, David Moyes will have to make sure his charges are not distracted by the news and are focusing on matters on the pitch.
Vitalii Mykolenko left Ukraine’s camp with an injury, with Moyes saying he had a chance to play today. Summer signing Christian Nørgaard has been in full training and came through a closed-doors friendly over the break unscathed.
