This version of the NFL coaching cycle has been insane. I cannot remember another time when so many successful head coaches have hit the market. That continued today with Sean McDermott being fired by
the Buffalo Bills. McDermott finishes his tenure in Buffalo with a 98-50 regular-season record.
Of course, the reason he was fired was his 8-8 postseason record. The Bills’ front office apparently doesn’t believe that he is the guy to get them over the top. This year seemed to be their year, with both the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens missing the playoffs, but they lost a heartbreaker to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round on Saturday night.
Now, do Mike Borgonzi and the Tennessee Titans pivot on their plans for today? It has been pretty widely reported that they are down to three finalists – Matt Nagy, Robert Saleh, and Jeff Hafley. Will they put things on hold to try to get McDermott in here for an interview before making their final decision? They should.
Here’s the thing: Hafley is probably going to end up being hired by the Miami Dolphins today. That leaves them with Nagy and Saleh. Nagy is not in high demand, so they can afford to wait on him. Saleh is probably going to get a job this cycle. If they end the day today thinking Nagy is the favorite, you can wait to talk to McDermott before you hire him.
A combination of McDermott as the head coach and Brian Daboll as the offensive coordinator would be a pretty good get for Mike Borgonzi.
