The fall tennis season does not begin with the pressure of Southeastern Conference dual matches.
For Missouri, it begins with individual tournaments, long practices and an opportunity to discover exactly what the program has become.
As the Tigers prepare for the first invitationals and tournaments of the year, new head coach Robin Goodman is looking beyond wins and losses. His first months in Columbia represent something larger than a typical fall season. With a fully rebuilt roster, a new coaching
staff and a program searching for its identity, the early tournaments will serve as the first real test of the foundation Goodman is trying to establish.
That foundation starts at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
Goodman arrived in Columbia with more than a decade of Division I coaching experience, including head coaching experience at Pacific and a season as Tennessee’s associate head coach. But when he accepted the Missouri job, he saw more than a rebuilding project.
He saw potential.
While talking with Goodman this week, Goodman said Missouri has the resources, facilities and people necessary to compete at the highest level. His vision is to turn those advantages into a program that is competitive nationally, relevant in the SEC and recognizable because of the way its players compete.
Now, that vision moves from conversation to competition.
Fall invitationals provide a unique opportunity for a team undergoing as much change as Missouri. Unlike the intensity of the regular season, individual tournaments allow players to develop their games, experiment with lineups and learn how they respond to difficult moments on the court.
For Goodman and his staff, every match will provide information.
Who thrives under pressure? Who responds after a difficult first set? Which doubles partnerships begin to develop chemistry?
Those answers cannot always be found during practice.
They have to be earned in competition.
That makes this fall particularly important for Missouri. The Tigers enter the Goodman era with a roster that looks dramatically different from the one that competed last season. Sophomore Alex Ackman is the program’s lone returning player, while newcomers from across the United States and around the world are being asked to quickly learn new coaches and build relationships with unfamiliar teammates.
The challenge is not simply preparing players to hit forehands and serve under pressure.
It is preparing a team to become one.
Goodman has already emphasized that he wants Missouri to be known for how hard it competes for one another. That standard will be tested immediately during the fall season, when individual results matter but the larger goal remains collective development.
The vision also extends beyond this semester.
Goodman is building for Missouri’s future, from recruiting internationally to creating a coaching staff capable of developing players at multiple stages of their careers. Associate head coach Manny Raga and assistant coach Bronte Murgett joined Goodman with the goal of helping establish a program capable of becoming a consistent competitor in the SEC and nationally.
But every long-term plan has to begin somewhere.
For Missouri tennis, that beginning is happening now.
The invitationals will not determine where the Tigers finish when conference play arrives. They will not define Goodman’s first season. But they will offer the first glimpse of what his program can become.
This fall is about more than tournament results.
It is about learning.
It is about chemistry.
And most importantly, it is about turning a vision into a foundation that Missouri tennis can continue building upon long after the first serve of the Goodman era.
