UConn women’s basketball capped off its regular season home slate by pummeling Georgetown Hoyas 84-52 at PeoplesBank Arena on Thursday. With the victory, the Huskies set a new program record with their 19th conference victory of the year.
Azzi Fudd led UConn in scoring for the seventh time in the last eight games with 24 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Meanwhile, Sarah Strong approached a triple-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in just 23 minutes.
Ashlynn Shade reached double-figures for the ninth time in her last 11 outings with 12 points, Blanca Quiñonez finished with 10 points and four steals while Kayleigh Heckel notched 11 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting.
As a team, the Huskies assisted on 24 of 31 baskets.
Georgetown kept it close early with a hot start from three. The visitors made four of its first seven triples to stay within single digits throughout the first quarter. At the end of 10 minutes, UConn only led by one.
Down the other end of the floor, Fudd once again carried the Huskies’ offense in the early going. She had 13 of their first 17 points, knocking down her first three attempts from behind the arc.
Once the shots stopped falling for the Hoyas, UConn quickly pulled ahead. The Huskies opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run — with 10 of those points coming from Strong — before Georgetown made its first bucket over four minutes in. UConn scored the next five points, then closed the half on an 11-0 burst to go into the locker room up by 23.
The break did little to cool the Huskies down as they started the second half with 13 straight points. Over a span of 13:06 between the second and third quarters, UConn outscored the Hoyas 40-5. In the end, the Huskies came away with a 32-point victory.
With the win, UConn secures its fifth consecutive 30-win season and 29th overall. Next, it’ll will wrap up the regular season with a Sunday showdown against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
