Purdue soccer pulled off a tremendous upset today at Folk Field, knocking off No. 2 ranked Michigan State 2-1. It was the first time that Purdue has beaten a No. 2 ranked team in soccer, and it is the highest ranked Purdue has beaten since 2007 when it beat No. 1 ranked Portland on September 9, 2007 (Fun fact: that Portland team had Megan Rapinoe).
It is also the second ranked win Purdue has had in a week, as the team beat No. 21 Michigan on Thursday. Purdue is 12-1-2 on the season and 6-1-1 in Big
Ten play, with the lone loss coming at #16 UCLA by a 2-1 score. In soccer a win is worth three points and a tie worth one, so Purdue’s 6-1-1 has them with 19 points, two behind league co-leaders Ohio State and UCLA, who are 7-1-0 and atop the league with 21 points. The Boilers have four matches left, including against the Buckeyes next Sunday in West Lafayette.
Michigan State got on Purdue early with a second minute goal, but Emilia Deppe responded six minutes later to make it 1-1. Irene Campo then score from the penalty spot just after halftime for the final margin. Goalkeeper Grace Miller finished with six saves as well.
With the win there is now an excellent chance the Boilermakers will make the NCAA Tournament for the first tiem since 2021 and only second time since 2009. They may also crack the top 25 this coming week.
